Photography Love

Photography is therapeutic to me… I shut myself off and just dive into the details trying to capture the beauty and love in one frame, experimenting with colours and textures. I have always loved going through old and new pictures ever since I was a child… because every picture has a story to tell…. And being able to capture memories and details is sheer joy. Through photography I try to capture beauty around me through mundane things… I just have to look closely… I see beauty in textiles, in intricate designs, in nature and in vibrant colours. I love photographing interiors, travels and still life…. Having said this let me confirm I am no professional photographer… To me photography is all about chasing beauty in our daily lives and the camera goes wherever I go. Each one of us has a medium to chase beauty and love… it can be art, dance, theatre,  … what is your medium? I would love to hear your journey.

Srivatsaa Photography

Today I’d like to feature Srivatsan Sankaran’s distinctive style in his photography. I love the way he uses natural light and how he captures a unique moment in time. You will see how he brings out the simplicity of life and nature through his pictures.

Let’s get to know more from Srivatsan himself.

"I am Srivatsan Sankaran hailing from Chennai, India. I am Engineer by education but a diehard Photographer by passion. I have been pursuing my passion for the past 6 year. It began with Sony DSC-S600 and used it for landscape, portrait, etc. After 3 years, I transitioned to Nikon Coolpix and used it for 6 months. I learned a lot through a dedicated lifestyle for understanding the very nuances of photography. My primary objective of photography is bringing out a sense of union with Mother Nature, and a sense of singularity with people. Exploring and experiencing the new places to capture people’s life style, culture and tradition in the sincere way bring immense happiness to me. Over the years, I ventured into commercial photography like small portfolio, wedding candid, Product shooting and post production work. Since I always believe in shooting in a natural way, it helps me to bring a kick start in candid and other shootings."

How did you discover your passion for photography?

Photography is used to be an area of significant interest till 12th standard. In the two years, I developed a keen fascination for photography. It resurfaced on a trip to Munnar where I had my first experience using a small point and shoot camera with which I clicked picture of sunrise with a heavy fog. I put up the clicked pictures on Flickr and received comments by foreigners which really appreciated me. In order to pursue more knowledge, I was looking for like minded people and so I put effort to perceive a specific group where we share our knowledge through practical experience. Although i was studying in college, I started to travel many places to cover various events like Holi in Mathura and vrindavan, Dussehra in Mysore and Kulasekara patinam, Jallikattu in Alanganallur , Monsoon moods in North East India etc,. This helps me to root in photography very deeply.

Did you get any formal training?

No, I did not get any formal training and I learned it through practical experience. Most of my work is related to Travel Documentary and so experience is the best teacher. If one has enough passion about anything, He/she doesn't require any formal training except Hard work, Patience and humbleness.

What kind of photography are you into?

I am into Travel, Creative candid portrait, Macro and Monochrome. Although most of my works are related to travel and Macro, I always love to experiment with creative works.

Any tips for someone who is new to photography?

Always believe three Mantras when you are new to photography

1) Hard work -Leads to Excellency in skill

2) Patience - Leads to better life

3) Humbleness - Helps to learn a lot!

Follow your own passion and never let it down. Respect other’s work. Most importantly, please don’t copy other’s creativity

Have you had any exhibitions done so far? What are your future plans?

Yes, I have done more than ten exhibitions in different places across India and my future plan is to conduct Solo exhibition of Travel Documentary in My place. I worked in a Corporate Company for two years. Since I am so passionate about photography, I am planning to venture into Full time photography and will take candid, Travel documentary and any assignments.

Bindaas Thankam Shots-Out Photography

A week back I accidentally discovered a talent in the photography world and I just knew I had to feature her passion and skill in photography. Popularly known as Bindaas Thankam, I personally love her food photography, the mood she creates for her pictures and some of her portrait shots are powerful.

Over to you Thankam to learn a little more about yourself and your work -

"Hi, I am Thankam Kumaran and in the photography world I am known as Bindaas Thankam. Presently am based in Kochi. Bindaas became my moniker thanks to my time at Radio Jockey Training. Photography was never my first love. I have always been into music and poetry. I was trained in western classical Piano and Vocals for 2 years. Had to leave music due to TB and it took me over three years to recover from it. This affected my vocal quality. So, I decided not to sit and cry about it, rather decided to do something that requires creativity. I use to take decent good photographs with my point and shoot, then my dear friend recommended me to put my energies into photography and for that he also advised me to get a basic course in Graphic Designing. It helps in the long run for editing and working on commercial photography.

I have invested myself into full time photography ever since my marriage. Being married to a naval officer enabled me to travel places and helped me photograph different places and faces. I love doing portraits more than anything else, but with weather, time n space I have taught myself to blend into different genres. Yes I am self taught. Google and studying works of masters like Steve McCurry has helped me a lot. I never copy anyone's style and always believe in making my own statements. More than technicality, I believe in bringing the candidness in every frame.

Food photography happened by chance. I have been cooking ever since I was a kid and after marriage I wanted to write a cookbook, so voila the idea of food photography came from there and there has been no stopping ever since. Apart from travel and food photography, I also love doing sunsets one of my favourite subject in landscape.

I provide professional services for small events like baptisms and music concerts and also do candid portraits for kids, family, women, and men. I also shoot for cake artists. Being a graphic designer, I also design albums, logos, catalogues. I am also a digital makeup artist. Upcoming assignments may involve me in clothing lines, restaurants and yes lots of Travel.

Photography has changed my life; it has made me more responsible and appreciative of life. I have dedicated my life to raise funds through my assignments to provide education to kids and to provide protection to wild life. My goal is not get famous but to contribute to the changing fabric of my world."

Alchemy of Spice

Yesterday I finally got a chance to play with my camera… with the permission of my toddler of course. Though she was intensely observing me play around with spice, she decided to stay away as it’s not her kind of game. And I was fortunate to continue with my photo shoot.

Spices play an essential part in our cooking. I have always tried to get to know my spices and combine the different flavors in my dish to create something distinctive. It’s all about mix and match. And besides the exotic flavor they are great to take pictures!

Smell your spice, take in the aroma and play around with it to enhance your dish!!

Aparna Balasubramanian Photography

Aparna Balasubramanian, a freelance photographer, discovered her passion for photography when she started writing her food blog 5 years back. She started with food photography for her blog and wasn’t too happy with her initial pictures. So she took a basic course on how to use a professional camera, the rest was self taught, she read a lot, watched tutorials, practiced and led her photography beyond food. Her passion in food photography and styling, street photography and black & white photography increased and started giving workshops for aspiring photographers.

Here are some beautiful pictures clicked through her lens
