Kaila – the Art Hut

Sujatha Velmurugan, a psychiatrist by profession, residing in California started jewelry designing as a hobby and Kaila- the Art Hut was born. Most of her designs are handcrafted by Sujatha where she incorporated expensive and inexpensive materials. I found her designs very colourful, bold and earthy. Kaila- the Art Hut also caters to handmade crafts as well like lampshades and candles. The proceeds from the sale are donated to a legitimate charitable organization for differently-abled children, ''Malarchi' in Tamil Nadu, South India.

Check out some of her beautiful pieces

Visit her facebook page to view all her designs and you can get in touch with her at kailathearthut@gmail.com

Magic of Kannur

My visit to Kannur in July was such a fun trip. The sumptuous food, scenic landscape and the outlook of people there who live life to the fullest were some of the highlights of this trip. This place is also a hub for textiles and handloom mills. It’s a great place to shop for dress materials, table cloth and curtains. Thanks to my co-sister and family, who are settled in Kannur, made our stay there a memorable one.

Kalaniketan: Ethnic Fine Art Boutique

Kalaniketan is an exclusive boutique in Cochin for Lucknowi Chikan work on fabric. I had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful designer and owner of this boutique, Honey Vijayan, who has been in this venture for the past 16 years. This boutique offers a variety of sarees, salwar materials, readymade short kurtas and even shirts and kurtas for men. It was so hard for me to stop shopping there! The varieties of embroideries on sarees are worth checking out. This store definitely offers the best chikan art work on clothes in Cochin.

Pick of the Week - Glass Jar Pendants

This unique and glass inspired lamp at your home will definitely have your guests giving a second glance when hung in pairs or in different colours. One aspect that had me worrying is the overheating of the lamp and my guess is you need to use low voltage bulb. When buying such lamps please make sure there is a small hole drilled at the bottom of the jar for air circulation else the light can get hot or even burst. Or even buy the ones that are open on the bottom of the jar for your safety.

I’d love to have these in my kitchen to give that Vintage look.
