Home Tour: Saritha’s residence in Netherlands

Hey everyone! I got busy with family for the past few weeks that needed my attention but I am back to blogging now.  I am so glad to resume to what I love because I missed you all. But I have to say I not going to be consistent with my blogging for the next one month because of my family commitments that needs my attention… Meanwhile I am here with another beautiful home tour. This home is from one of my favorite travel destination, Netherlands.

Saritha Ashok has converted her home into a cozy retreat and strives on minimalism, because of her constrain in space. She focuses on living a clutter-free life and as a result making her space peaceful home airy and surrounds herself with soulful elements like flowers, candles and books. I love how she puts together different elements to create beautiful vignettes.

 Let’s hear more from Saritha herself on her inspiration for her décor style and enjoy her home tour!   

“I am Saritha Ashok and I am from Kerala in India. I live in a small town in Netherlands called Leiden, with my husband and 12 year old son.  

When we moved here, on the decor front I decided I will keep it all bright and clutter free and minimalistic. I do slip at times, but I think I have managed to stick to it mostly. I can’t say that my decor style belongs to a specific category. I think it’s a mix of country cottage/farmhouse with hints of boho and Indian traditional. I love to decorate with earthy and handmade accents. Most of our furniture in this home was bought from used furniture groups online and most of the decor accents are flea market finds. I also carried a few of my favorite pieces from India. So you can call it a “thrifted home” :)  

My favorite piece of furniture in the house currently is the blue sideboard. It is an old piece that I painted and it looks stunning now, if I may say so. My favorite space in the house has to be the living area. I spend a lot of time on the couch enjoying the view of the canal outside! Also, we mostly have our meals here (not on the dining table, I confess).  

My decor tip would be to keep it simple and minimal. You can add pops of colour using flowers, candles or even books! Plants can also add a lot of character to any space. And do not hesitate to experiment, because I think that is how you develop your own style. “

Home Tour: Karishma Kalla's home in San Francisco

I read somewhere that “home is never a place but always a feeling… forget the roof and shelter – home is a beating heart, a warm touch and a reflection of the owner’s soul”… Isn’t it true? That is exactly what I felt as I browsed through Karishma’s beautiful home… It was a reflection of her soul, personality, her tastes and full of character. I personally love the beautiful mix of different culture and her love for Asian décor.  Her home reflects her love to art, colour, travel and textiles. Her décor is accentuated with fresh flowers, books and numerous artifacts from around the world. Her outdoor space is beautiful where I can just sit with a bottomless glass of wine and just unwind and read a book.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My family’s ancestral roots are from Jodhpur but I was born and brought up in Mumbai. I have studied commercial arts and have worked in various ad agencies before moving to Gurgaon after my marriage. We spent many years in Gurgaon where I worked with a design and marketing consulting company, post which we moved to Singapore for a few years. I currently live in San Francisco along with my husband and two year old daughter.

What is your décor style?

Passion and interest for home décor runs in the family. Both my mother and my mother in law have great taste in décor. My mother in law is an artist herself and makes fantastic Tanjore painting, some of which adorn our house. My husband and I admire artifacts, many of which we have collected during our travels & vacations.

The décor of our home is influenced by Asian themes, be it trinkets from a small flea market in Bali; pineapple based decorative from Hawaii, Malay influenced designs from KL, terracotta warriors from China or an exclusive designer piece from Singapore. I love colors! For me colors play a very important role in making a setup look beautiful and lively. A good balance of colors, décor and furniture can enhance any dull corner of your home.

I love anything ethnic with an Asian décor and style. I feel they are colorful, traditional and vibrant. Hence, you will see them in all corners of my home.  Cute little things are my favorite, I collects them from wherever I can.

Your favorite space.

My favorite corner in my home is my front porch and my garden where I enjoy my daily cup of tea in the beautiful California weather. I love playing with my daughter in the garden.

Any tips for our décor lovers out there?

A beautiful home always demands cleanliness..  my décor tips are  fresh flowers (always work and bring positivity and happiness), good use of prints, and enjoy experimenting!

Home Tour: Residence of Gayatri Singh

Hello everyone! It’s my favorite segment for the day - Home tour time! Every home is different, with different stories to tell. And today’s home tour tells us a different story.

Gayatri Singh, a professional chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America, has opened her doors for us for a tour of her cozy apartment in Singapore. She has deep passion for interiors apart from food and you can see it in every corner of her gorgeous space. Her home is filled with beautiful artifacts and beautiful vignettes. She has collected interesting curios and décor accents as she travels the world. I love the way how she has struck a balance between traditional elements and global décor. And so effortlessly she manages to tie so many elements together.

Where do you get your inspiration for your home décor?

My love for interior designing started when I moved to Tokyo where the home designs are minimalistic yet elegant. I got inspired by the elegant and delicate Japanese decor as well as the places I traveled. Over the past 10 years I have lived in Tokyo, Boston, Hong Kong and now I am residing in Singapore. My decor style reflects the journey through those 4 cities with heavy emphasis on local tastes. 

What is your favorite décor style?

My favorite decor style is a bit of a fusion of Asian Vintage and Colonial Indian decor.

Your favorite décor accent.

There are many favorite accents but the most favorite one is the wooden ladder I found in a junk shop in Tokyo and bell metal hanging lamp I bought in India. 

Any tip for our home décor lovers out there?

I am no expert but the only thing I can advise is, try to find your style, your choice and then design your home. Don't clutter. :)
